Record rainfall

Staff writer

— The Crossville area has received 44 inches of rain since January 1, putting us 14 inches above normal. We had more rain in the first week of July than we normally would get for the entire month. During this first week, 7 inches fell in a band from Crossville to Fairfield Glade with at least 6 inches over the remainder of Cumberland County. Above normal rainfall is expected for the next two weeks. According to meteorologist Steve Norris, we may be on our way to the wettest July on record and maybe the wettest year ever recorded. The most rain ever for this month was 11.95 inches in 1967 and the wettest year ever was 1973 with 74.36 inches. The cool temperatures have been very unusual. "We had the coolest July 4th in 37 years and the high of only 69 on the 6th was the lowest ever for that date."
