A 19-year-old woman was in stable condition Thursday at an area trauma center but faces a host of charges stemming from an officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon.
Victoria Rose Gaw, 19, was airlifted from an area of Taylor's Chapel Rd. after a deputy fired at her to end a high-speed chase in a stolen patrol vehicle. She is charged with two counts of attempted second degree murder, felony reckless endangerment and theft more than $10,000.
Cumberland County Sheriff's Department deputies and investigators were investigating the burglary of a home in Claysville when they observed Michael Shawn Walker, 26, driving from behind the residence. As he was being placed under arrest, officers spotted a Toyota pickup leaving the next door neighbor's property at a high rate of speed. That truck reportedly have been stolen, sheriff's department sources stated. A traffic stop was made and Gaw detained. Gaw is the alleged girlfriend of Walker.
While being detained, the press release states Gaw was able to manipulate the handcuffs and climb through the patrol vehicle sliding window. She then fled the scene in the patrol vehicle, leading officers on a high-speed chase.
The pursuit ended on Taylor's Chapel Rd. when Gaw attempted to run over two Cumberland County deputies with the vehicle. One deputy discharged his weapon, striking Gaw. The patrol car came to rest in a private drive after striking other patrol cars.
She was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center by Air Evac and underwent surgery. She was listed in stable condition at press time.
No officers were injured in the incident.
Gaw will also face charges of aggravated burglary and theft.
Both Gaw and Walker were scheduled to be in Cumberland County General Sessions Court on Monday and failed to appear. Attachments for their arrests have been issued and will be added to their charges.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department are investigating the incident. The officer is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
