Members of the Cumberland County Fire Department and Cumberland County Rescue Squad placed fourth in basic vehicle extrication at the Tennessee Association of Rescue Squads annual convention held Oct. 12 in Knoxville. This is the first time Cumberland County has competed in the event.
The team included Cumberland County Rescue Squad members Richard Powell and Garry Laythem and Cumberland County Fire Department personnel Derrick Carter, Mike Finley and Kenny Kilgore. The fire department provided extrication training to members of the rescue squad, and the rescue squad had provided some fire department members training in ropes rescue. The rescue squad decided to put a team together. The team, after only one practice, competed the car demolition in 11 minutes 42 seconds and provided patient care inside the vehicle.
Next year, Laythem said the team plans to win the competition and qualify for the Winner's Circle advanced extrication competition.
