Staff writer

CROSSVILLE — A store employee narrowly escaped injury when a suspected shoplifter displayed a knife and lunged at the loss prevention employee last week, according to Crossville Police.

The incident took place Friday around 6:50 p.m. at Burkes Outlet in The Crossings shopping center off N. Main St., according to Ptl. Andrew King's report.

The store's loss prevention officer — Jeffery Marcinek of Harrison, TN — told police that he observed a man enter the store and shop around for about 30 minutes, pickup up about $200 worth of merchandise. Most of the items were men's clothing.

The man exited the store, making no attempt to pay for the items. Marcinek told police at that point, he confronted the man and identified himself as store security. The man started fighting with the store employee and at one point, tried to choke Marcinek, the victim told police.

After breaking free, the shoplifter swung a blue-handled knife at Marcinek's face before fleeing the area on foot.

Police are waiting to review security tapes as the investigation is continuing.
