CROSSVILLE — The Cumberland County Board of Education approved the 2014-‘15 school calendar, with school beginning Aug. 6 and ending May 23.

Bruce Simmons, supervisor of instruction, said he had reviewed the proposed calendar with teachers and principals, seeking input.

“We want to end the first semester at Christmas because teachers and students don’t like to give finals after coming back from the break,” explained Simmons. Also, previous calendars included a week for fall break and three days for the Thanksgiving holiday. That moved the first day of school to Aug. 6, 2014, an abbreviated day, that ends at 10 a.m. for students. The first full day of school is Aug. 8, 2014.

Rolf Weeks, PTO representative, pointed out that put the start of school during the annual 127 Corridor Sale.

The winter break would begin Dec. 22, 2014, and continue through Jan. 2, 2015. with students and teachers returning Jan. 5. Spring break is April 6-10, 2015, with no school on April 3, 2015, due to Good Friday.

The last day of school would be May 23, 2015, a Saturday, with school dismissed at 10 a.m.

The calendar includes 88 days the first semester and 92 the second semester, which typically has more snow days than the first semester.

Dan Schlafer, 9th District representative, moved to approve the calendar, supported by David Bowman, 7th District representative. The motion passed with Bowman, Jim Blalock, 8th District representative, and Josh Stone, 4th District representative, voting no.

In other action, the board approved second reading of policy changes to the ADA grievance procedures, worker’s compensation and elementary promotion and retention policies.

Also approved was the appointment of Teresa Boston to the ethics committee following the resignation of Tim Claflin.

Bowman said he felt the committee should not include a school employee since it dealt with complaints of ethics violations by board members and school administrators.
