Harrison named valedictorian of SMHS Class of 2013

CROSSVILLE — Grace Harrison has earned top honors in the Stone Memorial High School Class of 2013.

Harrison was named valedictorian of the graduating class at the Top Ten breakfast held Thursday.

"My goal was just to be in the top ten," said Harrison, who was surprised by the announcement.

Harrison had a typical busy day on tap Thursday, leaving school for a matinee performance of Footloose at the Cumberland County Playhouse. She's been active in the theater since 2001, when she started taking dance classes and performing in shows since 2007.

At SMHS, she's active in the Student Council, Beta Club, Interact Club and Math Club.

Harrison is the daughter of Rob and Lisa Harrison of Crossville.

Next year, she plans to attend Auburn University and study interior design.

"I've always loved decorating my dollhouses and on the Sims games," she said. She had considered architecture and interned at Upland Design, which she said will aid her in her future career. She's also been active in visual art classes.

Wren Tackett is salutatorian for the class.

The Top Ten includes Jordynne Walker in the third spot; followed by Mark Brown and Destinee Dowdy, tied for fourth place. Tamarra Spalding is sixth in her class. Kyle Gibson, Harrison Kinchler and Levi Melton tied for the seventh spot. Mayce Ellis rounded out the Top Ten.

The students celebrated their academic achievement with their parents and teachers.

Principal Scott Maddox said, "This is a testament of the hard work and dedication to their studies. And parents, you've done a great job."

Guidance counselor Lisa Dillard echoed Maddox's praise for the students, adding this class had been a pleasure to work with and she was impressed with how well-rounded all the students were in their studies and their activities, with students representing the school on the local, state and national level in events such as Governor's School, Boys State and Girl's State and state and national competitions for Future Farmers of America and 4-H. One student, Levi Melton, achieved a lifetime of perfect attendance.

"Each of you have done so much to be a well rounded student," she said. "I've been impressed with how well you've represented our school."
