The Cumberland County Board of Education voted 6-3 Thursday to deny a request for a board hearing in a parent complaint.
Little information regarding the complaint was offered during the meeting, as the complaint includes sensitive, private information regarding both teacher and student. It was filed in accordance to policy 5.501 that states if the director is unable to resolve the complaint to the satisfaction of all parties with 10 days, a request for a hearing by the board may be made.
The director is to send the complaint, along with a report of her findings and recommendations, to the board for review.
Dan Schlafer, 9th District representative, said, "Based on the clear and concise and thorough documentation from the director and her staff, I move we deny this request."
The motion was supported by Richard Janeway, 2nd District representative.
The motion passed with David Bowman, 7th District representative; Sandy Brewer, 3rd District representative; and Vivian Hutson, 6th District representative; voting no.
In other business, the board approved the first reading of policy changes, including special use of school vehicles. The policy was amended to state bus drivers may use their school bus for transportation to and from work at the discretion of the transportation supervisor. There are several areas where bus drivers may take their buses to their homes and have them available for their morning route without having to drive their personal car to the bus garage in town and then back to outlying communities where their route is located. The practice of allowing drivers to keep the buses at their homes has resulted in significant savings on fuel costs for the school system.
Other changes includes the following:
•Correction of a website address in Emergency Preparedness Plan, policy 3.202;
•Addition of legal reference in Emergency Plans and Crisis Management, policy 3.203;
•Addition of after school supper program in Food Service Management, policy 3.500; and,
•Stating banquet costs must cover all food, supplies and CCSNP employee labor costs for Food Service Banquet, policy 3.501.
Policies approved on second reading include:
•Use of Electronic Mail, policy 1.805, to including messages shall not be sent that contain material that may be defined by a reasonable person as obscene or that are offensive or promote illegal or unethical activity;
•Advertising and Distribution of Materials in the Schools, policy 1.806, to add "advertisement program approved by the board following procedures established by the director;"
•Complaints, policy 5.501, with wording added from Complaints and Grievances Procedures for Citizens, policy 5.502, and specifies the calender or school days allowed in each step of the complaint process.
•Rescind policy 5.502;
•Combining policy 6.304, Student Discrimination/Harassment and Bullying/Intimidation, with policy 6.305, Student Concerns, Complaints and Grievances, and rescinding policy 6.305; and
•Revision of policy 6.411, Student Wellness, to reflect changes in state law.
