Suspected in Walmart thefts arrested

By Michael R. Moser

CROSSVILLE — A man accused of loading up hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise and simply wheeling the shopping cart out a door without pausing to pay for the items has been arrested for stealing and for trespassing after being warned to stay away from the store.

John Spencer Manis, 30, 1150 Al Goss Rd., is charged with two counts of theft of merchandise, three counts of criminal trespass and was also served an attachment for failure to pay a fine or court costs on an October no driver's license charge pending in Cumberland County General Sessions Court.

Manis was served the warrants after surrendering to authorities at the Justice Center last Monday afternoon, according to Sgt. Butch LeFebvre's report. He was placed under a total of $4,000 in bonds and is to appear in General Sessions Court on Nov. 25.

Crossville Police Det. Danny Harris wrote in his arrest affidavit that Manis, with help of another person, loaded shopping carts on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 and exited Walmart without paying for a total of $924.14 worth of merchandise. Most of the items had been taken from the automotive department in the store.

Police have identified at least one other person in connection with the incident, but no other arrests have been made.
