A crash involving a car and a tanker truck filled with a highly volatile substance has resulted in the shutting down of I-40 in the area of the 334 mile marker around 11 a.m. today. An elderly couple in the car were injured, but not believed to be life-threatened. It is believed the truck driver escaped injury.
Cumberland County firefighters were joined at the scene by Crossville and West Roane County firefighters and the local Emergency Management Agency as crews tried to keep the tanker's load stable until a professional hazardous materials team could arrive on the scene. As of this time, one lane on the interstate remains closed.
Traffic was being rerouted onto Hwy. 70 E between Crab Orchard and the Westel community, with the large volume of trucks on the state highway causing traffic to move at a snails pace in many areas.
