Rescue Squad takes prizes in state competition

CROSSVILLE — Members of the Cumberland County Rescue Squad and Cumberland County Fire Department took first place in the rescue challenge at the Tennessee Association of Rescue Squads annual convention held Oct. 4-5 in Pigeon Forge.

The challenge this year was a raft and swift-water rescue competition. According to Gerry Latham, the team finished the challenge in 8 minutes and 50 seconds, while the next team came in at 9 minutes and 40 seconds. The challenge included canoeing upstream and hitting two cones; paddling to a man standing in the water and giving him a high five and then paddling down the river and carrying the canoe back up. The team included Mike Finley, Derek Carter, Bob Sherrill, Kenny Kilgore and Latham. Finley, Carter and Kilgore are also firefighters with the Cumberland Count Fire Department.

Cumberland County also placed fifth in extrication, with the team of Finley, Carter, Latham and Mike Briggs; and Kilgore and Finley took third place in a cornhole tournament. Brandon Briggs, the five-year-old son of Angie and Mike Briggs, took second place in the tricycle rodeo.
