Cyclist hurt in traffic crash charged

CROSSVILLE — A motorcyclist who was seriously injured in a traffic crash two days before Christmas was flown to a regional trauma center for treatment of his injuries, according to Crossville Police.

Ryan Gene Molthen, 25, 25 Hassler Rd., was injured around 3:24 a.m. Dec. 23 when he crashed his 2004 Suzuki motorcycle while traveling in the 2100 block of Miller Ave., according to Ptl. J.R. Williams Jr. The extent of Molthen's injuries is not known.

Williams wrote that he observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed, running a red light at the Miller Ave. and Lantana Rd. intersection. Williams activated his lights and siren but the cyclist sped out of sight and Williams deactivated his emergency equipment.

Moments later Williams drove up on the crashed motorcycle. An ambulance was called and Molthen told the officer he had been drinking, according to Williams' report.

Molthen was taken by ambulance to Cumberland Medical Center and later flown to The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

Investigation is pending results of a blood alcohol test. Second offense driving under the influence charge has been filed.
