Panel recommends commission join TCCA

CROSSVILLE — Commissioners serving on the county's budget committee approved a motion recommending joining the Tennessee County Commissioner's Association again.

The county commission is to consider the subject during September's monthly meeting.

Harry Sabine, 1st District commissioner and budget committee chairman, said, "I would recommend we do it and join the association. It just makes sense. It's basically our only way of being represented in the legislature."

"How much does it cost?" Mike Harvel, 7th District commissioner, asked.

"The dues are $1,800," Sabine said.

The county commission previously was a member of the association, but decided against renewing and paying its dues last year during budget talks.

"I'm going to go ahead and recommend we join and the dues be paid," Sabine said.

John Kinnunen, 9th District commissioner, supported Sabine's motion and it was approved.

Commissioner Jan McNeil, 5th District, voted no and Dave Hassler, 3rd District, abstained from voting.

In other areas, Sabine recommended each county department submit a capital improvement budget for a five-year plan to the budget committee noting what department heads anticipate what they may need in the future.

"This will give us just something to look at and possibly prepare for upcoming expenses," Sabine said.

"Well, I think five years is going out a little too far. We did a three-year plan (the solid waste department)," Harvel said.

"It makes perfect sense to me," Kinnunen said.

McNeil made a motion to have Nathan Brock and the Cumberland County Finance Department to request the five-year plan from each county department.

Kinnunen supported the motion and it was unanimously approved.
