Bye bye winter?

Warmer weather expected through rest of February

CROSSVILLE — January 2014 was the fifth coldest January on record at seven degrees below normal. It was the coldest January since 1985, with average lows of 16 degrees and record lows of -10 recorded the morning of Jan. 7 at the Plateau Experiment Station and -9 recorded in Crossville.

Most of the area only saw four to five inches of snow for the month, which is near average. It was too cold most of the time for heavy snow as arctic air pushed the heavier moisture to the south. Liquid precipitation totaled only 2.75 inches, which is two inches drier than normal.

The worst of the winter cold is over, though, and we will see a major warming trend for the remainder of February. We survived the polar vortex of 2014! The weather pattern that sent arctic air down to Tennessee three times is breaking down quickly and highs in the 60s will come later this month, with a turn to near 70 possible.

With the warmer temperatures will come heavy rain at time. I imagine I will be talking about flash flood watches and thunderstorms as we go through the next six weeks.

For lovers of winter weather, I can tell you this, some of our heaviest snows have come in March. The right conditions can come together in a mild pattern, just like the Blizzard of 1993, but these things can be seen days to a week in advance. I can warn you should this start to line up before spring.

Tornado season lies just ahead, starting in March and peaking in April and May. Next month, I’ll be writing about the prospects for spring and how active the tornado season might be.
