Man struck with bat can't identify attackers

Staff writer

— A Rockwood man reportedly beaten with a baseball bat by an unidentified assailant told police he does not know who his attacker was and that he has no clue as to why he was beaten.

Cumberland County Sheriff's Deputy Brandon Tollett was one of the responders to travel to the area of a creek off Dogwood Rd. June 11 after Justin Crafton, 34, 521 S. Kingston Ave., Rockwood, was reported missing by family members.

Tollett wrote in his report that he located a trail and followed it, finding Crafton some distance from the road and suffering from what the victim described as a broken leg. He also had an injury to a hand.

Crafton told the deputy that he was out with his cousins the night before and in the process of leaving when a black SUV drove through the area and stopped. An occupant exited the car and started assaulting Crafton with a baseball bat, Crafton said.

He described his assailant as being short and stocky with short, blonde hair, a goatee and wearing earrings. There were no witnesses to the assault.

Crafton was transported by ambulance to Cumberland Medical Center's emergency room.
