Former volunteer coach nabbed in sting

A former Stone Memorial High School volunteer basketball coach and scorekeeper and substitute teacher in the county school system was arrested Friday evening as a result of a multi-police agency undercover sting operation, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department and 13th Judicial Circuirt District Attorney's Office confirmed.

Arrested on a single count of solicitation of a minor to engage in sexual activity is Billy Wayne Storey, 53, of 192 Old Mail Rd. He has since been released under $50,000 bond and is to appear in Cumberland County General Sessions Court on July 22.

Because the county schools' Central Office has been closed this week, information about Storey's current and past status with the school system could not be obtained.

The arrest is the result of a joint investigation between the newly formed CCSD's Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) unit and the District Attorney's Office, Deputy District Attorney Gary McKenzie said in a press release.

Allegedly, contact was made between Storey and someone representing themselves to be a juvenile male during which the undercover officer received graphic conversation of a sexual nature.

Chief Deputy Casey Cox confirmed that the investigation had been ongoing, but declined to give additional details.

"I would like to thank the hard work of the Chief Investigator Casey Cox, Deputy Scott Davis and Investigator Bobby Anderson with the Cookeville Police Department," McKenzie wrote in the press release. "Sheriff (Butch) Burgess should be commended for his dedication to the fight against child abuse and to the establishment of an ICAC unit to his sheriff's department."
