CROSSVILLE —

Coco Bennett was named the valedictorian of the Cumberland County High School Class of 2013 Monday at a special dinner at Fortés on the Square.

“I did my best and it worked out for me, I guess,” said Bennett.

She knew she had a high average, but didn’t expect to secure the top spot in the class.

“Some of my friends are so smart, I wasn’t sure where I would be in the top ten,” she said.

Bennett, the daughter of Chris and Kim Bennett, plans to attend Tennessee Technological University next year and major in computer science. Her goal is to be a computer science engineer living in New York City.

“It would be pretty cool to develop the next new thing,” she said, adding that website development was what she planned to focus on.

During her high school career, she has been on the CCHS Dance Team and served as communication coordinator for the Beta Club. She is also a member of the Math Club and Computer Club.

Outside of the school, she’s been active at the Cumberland County Playhouse for 14 years. She’s currently part of the cast of Footloose, playing through Feb. 24.

She also enjoys painting and has been honored with several art awards during her high school years.

Though she enjoys the creative outlets of theater, dance and painting, she wants to focus on her career for the next few years.

“Theater and dance are something I will do for fun,” she said.

Bennett has a brother, Dune, in the junior class at CCHS.

Joining Bennett in the Top Ten for the Class of 2013 is Bobby Uebelacker, salutatorian, followed by Fiaona Retzer, Landon Crawford, Whitney Hankins, Kelsey Scarbrough, Sam Howard and Jenna Davis. There was a three-person tie for the ninth spot between Jeryd Cannon, Kimberley Dunn and Tayler Houston.
