National champions

— On July  12, 157 seventh-grade girls teams met in Cincinnati, OH, in hopes of an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) seventh grade championship.

After declaring the games open at the opening ceremonies held at Xavier University, pool play games began in each division.  The Crossville Comets emerged from pool play with a number one seed after defeating the Ohio Sports Plus Shooters (53-47), South Dakota Wildcats (63-47) and Indiana’s Finest (34-32). The Crossville Comets emerged from the Sweet Sixteen with a 61-31 victory over the Massachusetts Sparks.  The final eight victory came over Kentucky Legacy (56-42).

The Comets then found themselves in the final four. A victory over the Ohio Cincy Legends (40-37) brought the team into a championship game re-match with Indiana’s Finest. Crossville Comets won the National Championship with a 54-43 victory over Indiana’s Finest on July 17.

This continued the winning tradition in national AAU competition that the Comets have enjoyed over the past four years. Crossville Comets have won one other national championship (2010) and had a seventh-place finish (2012). The team has also won the National Classic Bracket (2011).  Andy and Becky Brown coach the Crossville Comets with valuable assistance from Matt Miller, Brad Eldridge and Charles Scarbrough. Bookkeeper is Lynn Pilgrim and treasurer is Tiffany Cunningham. The Comets would like to thank all of their sponsors and fans for the support they have received during the AAU season.
