Council moves forward with property lease for company

CROSSVILLE —  The Crossville City Council agreed to move forward with a lease on property that TDL Logistics plans to use to train additional truck drivers they will need to hire for their operation and future expansion.

The school will be operated in partnership with the Tennessee College of Applied Technology (formerly the Tennessee Technology Center) near the TLD Logistics operation in the Interchange Business Park. TLD plans to add additional employment due to changes in the regulations that control trucking work. TLD officials say there is a shortage of trained CDL truck drivers and they plan to train and hire workers that graduate from the program.

The city has agreed to provide $5,000 of help to prepare the property for the use as planned and the company will work on the remaining expenses to get the location ready for use. According to Crossville Mayor J.H. Graham, as of the council meeting some 63 inquires had been received about the school. Currently the company employees 105 people locally and that expansion is expected to continue.

The lease was approved unanimously.

City council will hold a work session on Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. and in addition to a closed session with their attorney concerning the soccer complex wetlands issue the council plans to discuss plans for a veterans cemetery, sewer improvements and a water rate study recently completed.

The council moved forward with plans to sell to two residential lots on Waterview Drive that the city has owned for sometime. There is some question about deed restrictions on the property and the city is planning to sell the lots with some type of restrictions concerning setbacks and use of the lots similar to other restrictions in the area. The city attorney will prepare those deed restrictions for the council to approve at a future meeting.

The lots would be sold under sealed bids and the council would have to approve the sale in a council meeting. Following the approval, the proposed sale would have to be advertised for 30 days to give citizens a chance to protest the sale and request a referendum concerning the sale under the city's charter.

Councilman Souza's motion on the sale was approved by a unanimous vote.

The council approved appointing a planning task force for gathering public input on proposals concerning Meadow Park Lake. The public input would be used to make plans to apply for recreational grants early next year. The task force would be made up of Councilman George Marlow, a representative of the Lake Commission, the city manager, recreation director Steve Hill, Lake Manager Marlene Potter, City Clerk Sally Oglesby, a representative of the Chamber of Commerce, a representative from the county government, marketing director Billy Loggins, Veolia manager Clark Annis, and city engineer Tim Begley.

The appointment of the committee was approved unanimously and will begin meeting soon and plan for public meetings to gather input on the Meadow Park Lake recreation improvements.

The council also approved a new member of the Lake Commission to replace James Perry who resigned due to other commitments. Clarence Coffey was appointed to finish out Mr. Perry's term.

No action was taken by council on the Major Thoroughfare plan already approved by the Crossville Regional Planning Commission. Councilman Pete Souza had some objections about the map and some of the routes indicated even though they are planned by the property owners and not the city. Councilman Souza also expressed concerns about the traffic patterns directing away from existing business locations.
