CROSSVILLE — The Cumberland County Board of Education approved a change to its procedure for granting teachers tenure following changes in state law.

The policy had stated documentation of a record of excellence in teaching must include the record of attendance for the last three years. That was changed to five years following a change in state law that teachers are not eligible for tenure until they have five years of teaching experience.

Also, the one-year probationary period for a teacher who attained tenure but then resigned was extended to a two-year probationary period upon reemployment in the school system.

The date to notify teachers of non-renewal was also changed to June 15 of the year of eligibility for tenure.

Also approved were budget amendments to the pre-kindergarten and career and technical education budgets.

The board approved moving $8,000 to the travel line item for the pre-kindergarten budget, decreasing staff development funds by $3,000 and instructional supplies and materials by $5,000.

Josh Stone, 4th District representative, moved to approve the change, supported by Richard Janeway, 2nd District representative. The motion was unanimously approved.

The CTE budget was amended to add $12,000 for travel and $5,000 for materials for the T&I house under construction. The funds will come from contracted services after savings were found in the cost for students to attend Tennessee Technology Center at Crossville.

Wendell Wilson, CTE director, explained fewer students enrolled in the classes at TTCC and that funds could help alleviate constraints in travel costs for students to attend state and national competitions.

Sandy Brewer, 3rd District representative, moved to approve, supported by Stone. The motion was unanimously approved.
