9,000 without power this morning

CROSSVILLE — About 9,000 VEC customers are experiencing a power outage due to the failure of a 69 kV transmission line in the southern part of Cumberland County.

The 6.4-mile section of line runs between Highway 68 just south of the Homestead community and VEC’s Crossville Substation at 1499 Highway 70 East. VEC crews are working to isolate the problem on the cross-country section of the line.

The failure occurred at 3:12 a.m. Monday.

Affected communities include Vandever, Midway, Lake Tansai, Crab Orchard, Ozone, Grassy Cove, Alloway, and Homestead.

“We apologize for the inconvenience this outage is causing,” said VEC Vice President of Operations Clyde Jolley. “We believe we have the problem isolated to a small section of this line and we will restore service as quickly as possible.”

Now that this column has passed its first birthday, I’d like to send thanks to those of you from our county and around the country who have sent messages and questions about things you’ve read in the Uncle Gib section. It is hard to cover many of these events in 500 words, and I try not go cover the same event more than three weeks. Research must be cut way down, and the most interesting information on each subject included.
