Police seek scam artist

Staffwriter

CROSSVILLE — Fairfield Glade safety officers and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department is seeking a well-known local con artist who took several hundred dollars from an elderly woman and never returned to perform the work he was hired to do.

The incident occurred off Lakewood Dr. in Fairfield Glade on July 10, but was not reported to law enforcement until Aug. 22. No arrest has been made.

In the report filed by FFG Safety Officer Ronnie Schubert, the 83-year-old victim paid a local man $400 to clean under her residence. The man accepted the cash and promised to return on Aug. 16 to do the agreed work.

The victim, however, has not seen or heard from the suspect since entering the agreement. Sheriff’s Investigator David Gibson has joined the investigation and a Crest View Loop suspect has been identified.

Police caution residents to never pay a contractor for work before the work is performed, and whenever possible, to seek current references from the private contractor.
