Wrong-way driver stopped on I-40

25-mile chase ends with no injuries

CROSSVILLE — A Morgan County man who told officers he thought he was traveling on State Hwy. 27 when arrested after traveling for miles in the wrong lane on I-40 faces several charges including a third offense drunk driving.

Erik Shell Shadden, 39, 1161 Main St., Wartburg, is charged with reckless endangerment, felony evading arrest, reckless driving, second offense driving on a revoked license and third offense driving under the influence.

He was also cited for driving the wrong way on a divided highway, no proof of insurance and failure to carry evidence of registration.

The incident took place when deputies received a dispatch that a vehicle was traveling east in the west lane of I-40 in the area of the 324 mile marker. Deputy Mac Judkins spotted the extended cab Ford Ranger pickup in the area of the 334 milemarker and attempted to stop the vehicle.

"When shinning my spotlight on the driver, I did observe a white male driver look over toward my car, then look back and straight ahead ... " Judkins wrote in his report. Judkins got ahead of the vehicle and at the 340 milemarker used Stop Sticks — a portable device that is thrown across a lane of traffic to disable a vehicle by puncturing its tires — and disabled the motorist's front tires.

At the Harriman exit, Deputy Jeff Turner spotted the Ford pickup stopped on the side of the road with his headlights out. Deputies then took Shadden into custody.

Bond was set at $77,000 and a hearing in Cumberland County General Sessions Court has been set for Monday.
