LOOKING BACK: A weekly historical news feature

By Dorothy Brush / dcb1@frontier.net

1897 December

Jere Baxter, or his backers, have one week to come forward with the $112,500 and pay same to the Clerk and Master of the Chancery Court at this place or judgment will be taken on the note and the Tennessee Central Railroad will again be advertised and sold. It simply means the longest purse will get the road and the “creditor will get nit.”

Editorial: The general drift of talk is that the present congress will accomplish little in the way of really important legislation. This is no surprise as it has been the policy of both parties for years to act upon a plan that no legislation is better than that the party in power should pass such measures as they deem wise. The legislature convenes, parley, filibuster and consume time and the people “pay the freight.”

1945 December

The Goering armored car scheduled to stop here was delayed in Cookeville by a heavy snow storm. It never stopped here but went straight to Knoxville.

$2511.50 more has been pledged for our proposed 50-bed Uplands-Cumberland hospital and health center. The minimum to be raised by donation is $310,000. Last week, the hospital committee received a telegram from Congressman Albert Gore advising the Federal Works Administration had appropriated $9,650 for the hospital. This fund is to assist in preparing the plans for the new hospital.

At the grocery – 8 pound bag of Florida oranges: 49 cents; Campbell tomato soup: 9 cents; 3 pound bag coffee: 9 cents; Hershey candy bars: 2 for 7 cents; carton of cigarettes: $l.62 tax paid.

1987 December

City officials expressed interest in owning the Depot, which is being abandoned by Southern Railroad. For many years, the Depot was a focal point in the community. Its brush with fame came when the 1941 Gary Cooper movie on Sgt. York filmed a scene of the Depot when York returned from war.

The Frank Clement Fraternal Order of Police Lodge presented Crossville city policeman John Bilbrey as their “Officer of the Year.”
