LOOKING BACK: A weekly historical news feature

By Dorothy Brush / dcb1@frontier.net

November 1903

+There is a growing disposition on the part of our county courts to refuse to build wooden bridges over so many streams in the county, but to build good steel bridges over larger streams. This is meeting with the approval of the people generally. The court should be encouraged in its present wise policy.

+Fred Compton has J.W. Holloway’s well down 55 feet and no water yet. He has abandoned it temporarily.

+Ozone — Georgine, daughter of U.G. Wolfe, is able to again enter school after a lingering attack of remittent fever.

November 1929

+The PTA held their annual fall social at the city school building. Food service began at 5:30 with chicken sandwiches, pies of all kinds, coffee and popcorn balls were sold. The children never tired of fishing at the fishing pond. About 7:30 there was a costume parade with 18 in line. They marched through the auditorium and across the stage. Fred Brandon was awarded first prize. Last was the boys and girls yo yo contests. Miss Margaret Bandy and “Sonny” Rector were the winners. Approximately $35 was cleared on the sale of donated food.

November 1993

+The city’s tree board received an $18,000 grant to buy Linden trees to be planted from Penfield St. north to Elmore Road. This was to extend those already planted on Main St. Businesses along that route objected saying the trees would block visibility of signs and businesses.

+Crossville city employees are to be rewarded once a year with annual longevity pay replacing Christmas bonuses.

+Judy Carpenter Smothers, Crossville, was named a winner for her essay in the “Family Spirit” contest sponsored by USA newspapers. Her family was one of four featured in the paper. She, husband Mike and her son Jeff are working to found Creative Compassion, Inc., a nonprofit organization to assist poor families to build or purchase their own home.
