Man just wanted to trade shotgun for some beer

By Michael R. Moser / mmoser@crossville-chronicle.com

A man spotted outside a rural county convenience store was cause of some anxious moments, but in the end responding officers reported all they found was an intoxicated man wanting to trade his gun for something else to drink.

Timothy Allen Webster, 31, 95 World Outreach Dr., is charged with reckless endangerment and public intoxication and is scheduled to appear in Cumberland County General Sessions Court Monday. He was placed under $6,250 bond.

Deputies were dispatched to the Sawmill Market on Hwy. 68 in the Homesteads Oct. 31 around 8:40 p.m., after a passerby reported seeing a man with a shotgun at the store.

Cpl. Jerry Turner arrived on the scene, and according to his report, made contact with the suspect, who was sitting in the back seat of a Buick Century in the parking lot.

Deputy Bobby Moore arrived on the scene and officers learned from witnesses inside the store that Webster had allegedly entered the store, wanting to trade the gun for beer.

"Witnesses outside the store stated they thought there was going to be a shooting at the store," Turner wrote in his report. What was reported to be a shotgun turned out to be a rifle.

The rifle, which was loaded, and a .308 caliber loaded pistol, were recovered from the trunk of the vehicle.

Webster was arrested and taken to the Justice Center where he was booked on the two charges.
