LOOKING BACK: A weekly historical news feature

By Dorothy Brush / dcb1@frontier.net

November 1903

*Seven folks left on the night train to Nashville. They are all bound for Los Angeles, California to live. That makes 27 persons who have gone to California from our county in the past four years.

*On account of the rain, the nines of Johnson Stand and Pleasant Hill did not meet for a game of ball Saturday. Joe Chisam is manager of the Pleasant Hill team.

*Raymond Gibson is here from Luxors, Arkansas looking after men to drive teams and work in the lumber woods. He is engaged in a company that contracts to furnish 18 million feet of lumber and they are having much trouble in securing men. He took some 15 to 20 men with him when he returned.

November 1929

*Frank Potter has a contract for stripping the dirt from the flagstone at the John Odom, Jr. rock quarry, four miles east of Crossville. The job means moving some 1,200 to 1,400 cubic yards of dirt to get to the rocks. This rock is being shipped all over the United States and as far away as Hawaii. The market regards it as one of the most artistic stones available.

*Some Halloween pranks were in evidence Friday morning but very little was done that was hurtful or damaging. There were less pranks this year than usually the case on Halloween.

*The November 7 paper reported much rain. Burke-Potato digging has been the order of the day here for the past week when it isn’t raining. Woody-People in this community will be glad when the rainy weather ends. Mayland-We have had quite a bit of rain this past week. Vandever-We have been having some very rainy weather.

November 1993

*Snow showers blindside the county. Trick or treaters donned thermal underwear to shield against freezing temperatures on October 30 instead of the 31st because a major snowstorm was predicted on that day. From one to two inches were dumped across the county. Steve Norris, meteorologist, said this was only the fourth snowfall on the last day of October since 1912. Cumberland County had one inch of snow on October 31 in 1930.

*E-911 work is progressing slowly. Under the system, if a person is able to dial 911, then the location and the owner of the phone from which the call was made are known. There have been a number of reasons for the three-year wait.
