LOOKING BACK: A weekly historical news feature

By Dorothy Brush / dcb1@frontier.net

October 1903

+Judge Cordell Hull was on the bench and meted out justice to offenders against law and order with the hand of strict justice and with wholesome effect on the future conduct of numerous young men. He made it hard for pistol toters and liquor sellers.

+Vance Houston returned home to Crab Orchard last week from Hanging Limb in Overton County where he had been to see his best girl.

+Ozone — Warren Young acknowledges he is tired of the arduous labor of city life and will soon return to his farm and take life easy.

October 1929

+Mrs. Alice Bassett, Red Cross nurse for the county, gives a few simple rules on “how to keep well.” Keep away from sick people. When you feel sick go to the doctor. Use drugs only upon your doctor’s advice. Breathe lots of fresh air. Keep the skin clean. See that bowels move once a day. Drink lots of water. Eat regular, moderately and slowly. Sleep at regular times with windows wide open. Avoid insect bites. Wear suitable clothes for the weather. Get vaccinated. Exercise. Do not worry.

+Peavine — Hugh Center was in this community one day last week getting up his cattle.

October 1993

+Tennessee Wildlife Viewing Guide is a new book featuring 81 hot spots in the state for great viewing. The 96 pages include dozens of color photographs. TWRA and eleven other public and private nature-oriented organizations sponsored the book written by wildlife biologist and ornithologist Paul Hamel and compiled by Laura Mitchell of the U.S. Forest Service.

+The future of Tennessee’s revolutionary public health policy, TennCare, awaits federal O.K. from Health & Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala. Gov. McWherter is pushing hard for the program to go in effect January 1. There has been opposition from hospitals and the medical profession around the state.
