LOOKING BACK: A historical feature and look into the past

October 1903

+Ozone — The number of pupils in the public schools has increased to such an extent that the Presbyterian Home Mission Board deemed it wise to provide an assistant teacher.

+There was a bad wreck on the Tennessee Central between Ozone and Renfro. A work train headed for Crab Orchard and a train made up of empty slag cars headed for Rockwood collided on a curve running about 25 miles an hour. There were 20 men on the work train and 13 were injured. Newton Clower, assistant foreman at Waldensia, was killed outright.

+The beef market has been glutted by peddlers this past week.

October 1929

+The exploration work for marble at Crab Orchard promises to be of great importance to the town and of no small benefit to the county. Southern States Lime works at Crab Orchard has been in operation over 20 years and is a big industry. Thirty men are employed turning out 250 tons of lime a day.

+The Ladies Art Circle served meals at the Fair each day. They will also serve meals at the court house during court week. The entire proceeds are intended to go for the Art Circle Library fund.

+A representative of the Pan American Oil Co. was in town and took an option on an acre of ground belonging to James Smith for a wholesale plant site.

October 1993

+A milestone was reached at Crossville’s Vocational Technical School as David Gay of Crossville became the first student to earn certification as a Master Automotive Technician from the National Association for Automotive Service.

+The CCHS Handbook includes new rules. One is use or possession of radios, tape players, Walkman, portable phones, beepers, etc. on campus is prohibited.

+Saturday a storm reached its peak over Crab Orchard with 70 to 90 mile per hour winds. It peeled off the gym roof of Crab Orchard Elementary School. The school was closed for several days during the repair. There was also damage in the Tansi area, Homestead, Big Lick and Linary communities.
