School calendar and budget will top BOE agenda on Friday

By Missy Wattenbarger / mwattenbarger@crossville-chronicle.com

Members of the Cumberland County Board of Education will hold a special-called meeting on Friday, Sept. 19.

One of the topics to be discussed at the meeting is the fall break for students and teachers. Although a new school calendar has not been chosen, the board plans to make a decision regarding the length of the break.

Presently, the BOE is considering three possible calendars with different fall breaks. While two of the calendars have fall breaks on Oct. 13-17, the third option features a one-day break on Oct. 17.

It is unknown at this time how the decision at Friday's meeting will affect the remainder of the school year.

Next, the board will focus its attention to the 2008-'09 General Purpose Budget.

Due to a lack of funding, the board made approximately $1.7 million in cuts last month to cover as much of its $7.8 million deficit as possible. The deficit dropped to $6 million, and with the board promising to use $2.8 from its fund balance, it lowered again to $3.2 million. According to Director of Schools Aarona VanWinkle at the time, a 25.57 cent was needed to educate students like last year.

Last week, the Cumberland County Budget Committee suggested the BOE make more cuts after approving a motion to only give 10 cents of the county's debt service fund to the school system. No property tax increase was included, forcing the board to figure out a way to balance its budget.

The BOE will hold the special-called meeting at 5 p.m. in the boardroom at the Central Office. The public is welcome to attend.
