The Cumberland County Board of Education has one more meeting scheduled for this month. On Thursday, Aug. 28, the board will hold its regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m. at the Central Office in the boardroom to discuss various school issues.
After a moment of silence and pledge to the flag, special recognition will be given to outgoing school board members—Robert Safdie, 2nd District; Rick Smith, 4th District; and Gordon Davis, 5th District. This will be followed by community comments and approval of the minutes from the July 24 and August 8 meetings.
A facilities update on the Phoenix/Alternative School will be presented by Construction Supervisor Eric Newman before any school board or legal report is given. Director of Schools Aarona VanWinkle will provide a budget committee update, and business manager Cindy Randol will offer a monthly financial report.
Special education contracts pertaining to Center of Development occupational therapy and a certified occupational therapy services assistant are up for approval. Other items to be approved include the 2008-'09 extended learning programs proposal, Safe Schools Act proposal, Goody's grant for Stone Memorial High School and Crab Orchard Elementary's request for a football field dedication.
On the consent agenda, the following items are listed for approval: contracts at Martin Elementary with Coca-Cola, North Cumberland with Taylor Publishing and SMHS with Canteen Select; volunteers at Stone Elementary and SMHS; disposal of surplus property at South Cumberland Elementary; and the second readings of policies on school attendance (1.703), school support organizations (2.404), attendance (6.200) and the TSBA recommended code of ethics.
The meeting will conclude with discussion on other old business and the date for the September BOE meeting.
