Woman whose identity was stolen billed by Florida court

There are many kinds of identity theft going around these days but one that could literally prove to be a nightmare is affecting a Cumberland County woman, according to a report with the local sheriff's department.

Debora O'Brien, 51, of Estates Lake Dr., recently received a bill for $655.20 that she says she does not owe. To make things worse, that amount represents what the Felony Court of Miami/Dade County, FL, is trying to collect. The Debora O'Brien living here said simply, "It's not me."

Now someone with the Florida court system has informed O'Brien that to clear her name, she will have to report to the local police department to be fingerprinted, and that those fingerprints have to be forwarded to Miami for a comparison check.

The $655.20 represents the balance left on a 1979 grand theft auto conviction, a case that was closed on Nov. 12, 1980.

O'Brien told Sgt. Butch LeFebvre that at one time she did go by the name of Debora Davis and that a black female in the Miami area had for years been using her old name, date of birth and Social Security number. How the court system tracked O'Brien to Cumberland County is not certain.

When O'Brien notified the court system that she was not the one they were looking for, she was told she would have to submit to the fingerprinting in order to prove that she was not the same person.
