LOOKING BACK: A weekly historical news feature

By Dorothy Brush / dcb1@frontier.net

August 1887

The Cumberland County Teacher’s Institute met at Hale’s Chapel. Singing and prayer was followed by an excellent paper by Mrs. Vandever on “Woman’s Influence as a Teacher.” J.M. Siever conducted a drill in beginning practical arithmetic. S.C. Brown led a drill in the elements of orthography. The building was too small for more than half the people who came with baskets laden with mountain luxuries to witness the proceedings and enjoy a social day.

Pomona – Our architect and builder Joseph E. Jacobs has gone on a pilgrimage to Pleasant Hill in the interests of Brother Dodge and a large building that is going up in that place.

About 30 teams and a considerable force of hands have been steadily at work on the grade of the Nashville and Knoxville Railroad.

August 1945

Of the first two million men examined under the Selective Service Act of 1940, 41,000 were rejected for “ear defects.”

Notes from Uplands – Clinics, inoculations and house calls took Dr. Stewart over a wide circuit Tuesday. First a stop where three children had been exposed to whooping cough to fortify them against the disease. A delicate baby was inspected at the Eastland salesroom. At Pilot Knob an eager group was waiting on the porch at the clinic house and medicine, magazines and admonitions were dispensed to all. Then the Dr. was ready for the long drive “yons de the Caney Fork” there to dispense safeguards against diphtheria to the youngsters gathered at Flat Rock schoolhouse. Roads were hot and deep in dust and many footsore berry pickers and mothers with babies were picked up and set down during the trip.

August 1987

Trade-A-Plane is celebrating its 50th anniversary during July and August. Founded by Crosby Harrison in 1937, the TAP Publishing Co., the parent company, is a third generation family business.

Charles O’Brien has been appointed to the Tennessee Supreme Court by Gov. Ned McWherter. The Lake Tansi resident served as Judge of State Court of Criminal Appeals. He is the husband of Senator Anna Belle Clement O’Brien.
