LOOKING BACK: A weekly historical news feature

August 1903

+H.S. Marble has purchased the pine tree lot south of the Bartlett property on Main St. of L.D. Smith for $500 and expects to build a residence there.

+Editorial — The large wheat crop of the west has brought forcibly before the people a very beneficial condition that has existed for several years but has not been generally known. That is the disposition and willingness of college students and professors to do the hardest kind of manual labor, that of the harvest field. When the intellectual class is willing to labor by the side of his less informed brother it bodes well for the nation.

+The Bon Air Coal and Iron Company is actively engaged at work building 200 coke ovens at the Green Place, a mile and a half from the Scarbrough Mill place at the edge of White County.

August 1929

+Fifteen Boy Scouts who risked their lives to save others were awarded gold medals during a Court of Honor. This is the highest award possible for a Boy Scout of America. Last spring a group of Boy Scouts were camped at White’s Creek when a cloudburst hit. The water rose rapidly and seven scouts and their Scoutmaster drowned.

August 1993

+The Cumberland County Playhouse announced early registration for fall semester dance classes. The Dance Education Program is entering its fifth year and is made possible by a collaboration with Ballet Tennessee of Chattanooga.

+The Stork Resort is a midwife agency located at the Women's Clinic. Midwifery is new to Crossville and involves total care of the mother and child from conception to birth and check-ups and physicals afterward. A picture showed two couples with their new babies who were born at Cumberland Medical Center assisted by a nurse midwife.
