Deputies seize meth lab, stolen pickup

A Cumberland County Sheriff's Department supervisor on routine patrol stopped to check on the occupants of two parked pickup trucks last week and ended up seizing a clandestine methamphetamine lab and a stolen truck, according to reports.

Lt. Scott Iles wrote that he was on routine patrol when he decided to check a dirt road under the power lines off Old Hwy. 299 in Westel last Wednesday. As he drove on the remote road, he drove up on two pickups parked on the side the road, where two men ran off into the woods and fled the scene, according to the report. When he walked to the trucks, Iles reported seeing components commonly used in the manufacture of meth.

The Drug Enforcement Agency and a hazardous materials company were called to the scene.

A routine check of the vehicles found at the scene revealed that a 1987 Chevrolet S-10 pickup belonging to John Faulkner of Marietta, GA, had been reported stolen. That vehicle was seized. No charges have been filed and an investigation is continuing.
