Suspect in strong-armed robbery identified

It did not take Crossville Police long to identify a suspect in Monday night's "snatch and run" robbery of a Hwy. 70 E convenience store and a be-on-the-lookout has been broadcast for a Cumberland County man in connection with the incident.

City police were dispatched to the Citgo station at 1390 Hwy. 70 E around 7:10 p.m. Monday and when Ptl. Chad Withrow arrived on the scene, he observed an employee in an extremely frightened state behind a desk in the business, according to his report.

The clerk told Withrow that a man had entered the store and waited around for other customers to leave. The man then approached the counter and asked her to get him a case of beer. As the clerk walked to the cooler to get the beer, the man suddenly grabbed the cash register and fled out the door to a waiting silver-colored car which then left the station at a high rate of speed, traveling east toward Peavine Rd.

Area law enforcement officers were put on alert for the vehicle and police began their investigation of the incident.

Inside the store, they found the register, valued at $500, missing and items scattered around on the floor. Inside the register, the store owner said, was about $7,000 in cash.

Police viewed a surveillance camera video and immediately identified a local man as the suspect. Det. Kendall Hargis and Sheriff's Investigator Bo Kollros then traveled to a Highland Lane address in an effort to make contact with the suspect. The suspect's mother told officers that her son had come home, parked his car behind the house, ran inside, changed clothes, and then left in a hurry.

Investigators recovered the suspect's clothing, which matched clothing worn by the suspect captured on the video.

At press time police were still searching for the suspect.
