LOOKING BACK: A weekly historical news feature

The Lantana post office has been discontinued and for the present we shall put the papers in the Crossville office for all subscribers of that neighborhood.

A great reunion of participants in the battle of Gettysburg was held on the anniversary of the battle at its historic grounds. The Pickett’s Brigade, survivors of that terrible charge, were the guests of the Philadelphia Brigade which bore the brunt of the battle. When men who bravely fought each other for a principle, can meet in friendship we realize the war is over save with a few dishonest, dishonorable men who seek to gain a few votes by kindling anew the sectional feeling that so long existed.

Our flag flies once again over Corregidor. The cost was great in blood and pain but our fighting men did not turn back. And on Iwo Jima 4000 men died to take the long step forward to victory. 20,000 more suffered wounds. Yes, we are on our way to Tokyo! Support the Mighty 7th War Loan.

Editorial: While no peace treaty has been made never has the world been faced with so big a job as that of controlling Germany and bringing back to reason humane action and general sanity.

Cumberland Mountain Potato Farm has some 1,200 acres of cleared land. They harvested a crop of white potatoes grown on 235 acres. It was an unusually good crop and averaged close to 300 bushels per acre. They also grow clover seed, seed oats, barley and lespedeza. Their total income runs 8 to 10,000 dollars a year.

Peter Stubbs, county clerk, announced beginning July 1, 75 cents will be added to the price of all license tags.

Dedication ceremonies were held for the opening of the new Farmer’s Market just off U.S. 70N, adjacent to the west entrance to the Community Complex.
