LOOKING BACK: A weekly historical news feature

By Dorothy Brush / dcb1@frontier.net

July 1903

The decision of our people not to celebrate the July Fourth here at Crossville proved to be a great disappointment to many people all over the county. With a little effort and an all-pull-together movement Crossville could celebrate our natal day in good shape and much to the profit of our merchants.

Isoline — Miss Flora Wiley entertained a few friends Monday evening with a croquet party.

Prof. Farr, who was so completely exposed in Nashville a few months ago, has migrated to Montana and is up to his old tricks again, that of turning out “full fledged lawyers” in a month or two. The only prerequisite being a payment of any amount from $10 and up to $250.

July 1929

The G.K. Henard Bus Line put into service three new buses that carry eight passengers each. Two will operate between Crossville and Chattanooga and one between Crossville and Sparta.

Winesap — Lester Hale had the misfortune of getting his right shoulder thrown out of place by a mule getting scared and running over him.

Model A Fords swept to victory in Finland in a specially arranged contest based on war emergencies. It was staged by the military first aid section of the General Finnish Automobile Association. Competing against 14 different makes of automobiles manufactured in the United States and one Italian-made car, the sturdy Fords captured 18 out of 29 prizes.

July 1993

Glenda Bond of Crossville was elected president of The Arc of Tennessee at the annual convention held in Oak Ridge. She is an active member of The Arc of Cumberland County.

Fairfield Glade couple Robert and Mildred Garnes won the Captain D’s “Shrimp Celebration Sweepstakes.” They entered the contest during a visit to the restaurant. The seven-day Western Caribbean cruise will be a perfect way to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.

Gatlinburg began celebrating the 4th of July with a midnight parade in 1976 as a tribute to the country’s 200th birthday. It has continued every year with the parade beginning at 12:01 a.m.
