County approves budget amendments

By Gary Nelson / gnelson@crossville-chronicle.com

Commissioners approved several budget amendments during last week's county commission meeting including one that will enable the completion of upgrades to the Rinnie Convenience Center in northern Cumberland County.

Commissioners amended the agenda and added a resolution to the sanitation fund to increase revenue in the amount of $20,068 due to the sale of recycled materials. The amendment includes increasing expenditures by $20,068 in order to allow the purchase of a compactor to be installed at the Rinnie Convenience Center.

Commissioners also approved a $39,663 amendment for the sanitation fund and increased the line of sale of recycled materials. With the amendment, the commission increased expenditures by $12,000 for fuel in waste pick up; $27,163 workers compensation; and $500 for fuel in litter collection.

A $39,710 amendment to the county general fund was also approved. Commissioners approved decreasing the county fund balance by $39,710 in order to cover various budget overruns including county attorney, $8,500; sheriff's department, $3,000 for vehicle maintenance; $1,625 for animal control deputies; and $26,585 for workers compensation.

A $7,050 amendment was approved for the Cumberland County Board of Education for instructional supplies and materials. The funds were received for the BOE from the Touching Lives of Children grant. The funds are to be used for the Touching the Lives of Children software and training for pre-K through second grade.

All of the amendments were approved unanimously.

Other action approved during the meeting included:

• The re-appointment of Barbara Couch to the Cumberland County Library Board of Trustees for a second three-year term which will expire June 30, 2011; and

• The re-appointment of Paul Drake to the Cumberland County Library Board of Trustees for a second three-year term which will expire June 30, 2011.

Commissioners withdrew a resolution to freeze the Cumberland County Library Board of Trustees terms effective July 1, 2008 and ending June 30, 2010 at the request of the library board for further review. The resolution shall be brought up again at a later date.

Commissioners Jim Inman, 1st District, and Johnny Presley, 3rd District, did not attend the meeting.
