A White County man was jailed last weekend after authorities said he attempted to set up a rendezvous for sex with 15-year-old girl, 40 years younger than the suspect, according to police records.
Johnny Vaughn Cody, 55, 240 Cody Dr., Sparta, is charged with one count of solicitation for sex of a minor and was placed under $10,000 bond. He is to appear in Cumberland County General Sessions Court on Monday.
The suspect, who is known in Sparta as Jack, is an employee of the City of Sparta and a former White County Commissioner. Mayor Jack Petigo said Thursday that the incident is being investigated by city officials and that Cody has been suspended from his job pending the outcome of his court case.
The arrest was made around 6 p.m. Sunday at the Caney Creek bridge on Hwy. 70 W by Investigator Chad Norris and other officers. The arrest was made without incident.
According to the report, someone has been leaving pornographic materials under the bridge, accompanied by hand written notes on the materials, asking for an exchange of pornography for sex acts, according to Norris' report. The notes go on to describe in graphic detail what sexual acts are to be performed in exchange for the pornography. The notes ask that a date and time, or telephone number, be left to allow for the exchange of pornography for sex.
A note was left stating that 15-year-old wanted to meet the person leaving the material, setting up a date and time. When a man arrived at the scene at the designated time, he was stopped by authorities and a search of his vehicle was conducted. The search yielded "numerous pornographic materials, including the note that was left by the alleged 15-year-old.
He was immediately taken into custody.
