Two persons were hit by a small gun blast leaving one with serious injuries and the other minor in what authorities are viewing as an accidental discharge inside a convenience store. No arrests have been made.
The incident took place Sunday around 7:15 a.m. at the Homestead Fuel convenience store on Hwy. 127 S near the Hwy. 68 junction, according to Sheriff's Deputy Richard Tinch's report.
Witnesses and Derrick Coulter, 19, of Clifton Cemetery Rd., Spring City, told investigators that Coulter was looking at a weapon inside the store when the gun discharged when Coulter attempted to close the weapon. Coulter was grazed in the hand with the bullet traveling into his lower left abdomen area.
The .410 buckshot also struck the store owner's daughter in the calf area of the left leg. She was not seriously injured.
Coulter was rushed in a private vehicle to Cumberland Medical Center and later flown to The University of Tennessee Medical Center.
