Home built by students up for sale

By Heather Mullinix / hmullinix@crossville-chronicle.com

The Cumberland County Board of Education approved a request to increase advertising a student-built home currently for sale.

The home was built by students in the trades and industry programs and the school system provided materials for the construction. Once sold, the proceeds of the sale return to the program to build another house.

Chris King, director of career and technical education, said in a memo, "We have taken measures to advertise more widely, including the Internet, to improve the possibilities of selling the house. It is recommended that we might also advertise through local realtors to improve the sales opportunities even more. We can define the minimum acceptable amount when we list with them and agree on the terms at listing."

Director of Schools Aarona VanWinkle said the county's finance committee had indicated it would approve listing the house, if approved by the BOE.

"It's a beautiful house," she said.

Mary Smith, 7th District Representative, moved to approve, seconded by Richard Janeway, 2nd District Representative. The motion was unanimously approved.

The house is in the Homestead Acres subdivision on Hwy. 127 South. It is about 2,000 square feet with four bedrooms and two baths, along with an attached garage. The house is priced at $184,500 and reasonable offers will be considered. A warranty deed will be provided, but the buyer would be responsible for any closing costs. Final sale of the property must have approval of the Cumberland County Commission. The house is offered "as is — where is" with no warranty.

More information on the house is available on the Cumberland County Schools Web site, ccschools.k12tn.net. Those interested should call 484-6135 to schedule appointments.

The board also approved the 2009-2010 allotment of Carl Perkins Federal Funds for career and technical education. The county is budgeted to receive $139,381.

Smith moved to approve the allotment, seconded by Dan Schlafer, 9th District representative. The motion was unanimously approved.

In other business, the board approved school trips for Stone Elementary Renaissance Club and CCHS Math Club; a fundraiser at Martin Elementary; contracts with Lifetouch photography for Crab Orchard, Homestead, Martin, Pine View and Pleasant Hill elementary schools; a second reading on a policy update to the director of schools recruitment and selection policy; and bid specifications for painting at Cumberland County High School.

Also approved was a resolution supporting Cumberland County's application for the state's Three-Star Program, an economic development recognition program; a partnership agreement with the L.B.J.&C. Head Start program; focus electives for students with disabilities; and approval of applications for Title I, Title I stimulus funding, Title IIA, Title IID, Title IID stimulus funding, Title III, Title IV, Title V and Title X federal programs.
