Woman returns home to find man passed out in living room

Suspect reportedly tries to hang self following arrest

By Michael R. Moser / mmoser@crossville-chronicle.com

A Crossville man was arrested and charged with a home burglary in the city, according to court records and arrest reports. A few days after his arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to hang himself in his jail cell in the Justice Center and he now remains under watch in a secure room, unable to make bond.

Donnie Lynn Rector, 46, 283 McClarty Lane, remains jailed in lieu of $70,000 bond on charges of aggravated burglary and theft of property more than $10,000 in connection with a Highland Courtyard Loop burglary last Thursday night.

Crossville Police were dispatched to Highland Courtyard when a resident arrived home a little after 9 p.m. to find a man passed out on her living room floor and her apartment ransacked, according to Ptl. Jonathan Tollett's report. Police learned through their investigation that entry to the apartment was gained through a bedroom window.

The suspect lying on the floor was wearing a leather coat that the victim had given to her grandson.

Det. Gene Hall was called to the scene and a list of items missing from the home was compiled and given to the investigators. Some of the missing items included a Gem Star ebook, two DVD/VCR combos, a computer printer, digital cameras, video keychain, bed clothing, guitars, paintings, video games, a credit card, cell phone charger, keyboard and jewelry. Some of the items were recovered from the suspect's home and a radio controlled car was returned to the victim by a brother of the suspect.

Sources have told the Chronicle that over the weekend Rector, still jailed in lieu of bond, attempted to hang himself. The attempt was discovered by jailers who quickly cut him down. Rector was reportedly taken to Cumberland Medical Center where he was checked out and later returned to the jail.

Rector appeared in Cumberland County General Sessions Court the week before to answer charges of possession of a schedule IV drug and public intoxication. Those cases were continued until July 14 and he was scheduled to enter the Teen Challenge program.

It is not known if the latest arrest changes that effort.
