LOOKING BACK: A weekly historical news feature

By Dorothy Brush / dcb1@frontier.net

May 1903

The New York Press reports many men have the telegraphing habit as others have the telephoning habit. They send a “wire” with or without provocation even when time is not the object and a letter would serve.

A young lawyer’s career has been greatly accelerated by a judicious use of the telegraph. He manages to receive two or three messages wherever he happens to be, hotel, theater, museum, church, opera house or jail. When he crosses the ocean next month he will have half a dozen marconigraph a day by wireless. He is confident of keeping himself in the public eye.

There is a boy six or seven years old at the county poor house that some reliable person can adopt or apprentice if they choose. Apply to G.A. Haley or Judge W.A. Hamby.

May 1929

George S. Richardson has arrived in town to direct the work of developing the several rock quarries owned by John Oman, Jr. There are three in operation – 4 miles east of Crossville, 1 mile north of Crab Orchard and 1 near Monterey. It is the purpose of Mr. Richardson to develop the quarries to enter the general market with this very superior type of building stone. This stone of wonderfully variegated colors and markings lays in regular layers of a half to six to eight inches in thickness and are so uniform as though sawed.

W.A. (Lon) Rector is building a tourist camp at the junction of Highway No, 1 and the new concrete road being built to Nashville via Monterey, Cookeville and Lebanon near the corporation limit west of Crossville. He plans 8 tourist cottages on each side of the two roads, 16 in all with a gas station and lunch stand. This will be a distinct credit to Crossville.

May 1993

The Business and Professional Women’s Club of Cumberland County selected Dawn Marie Humble as its Young Careerist of 1993. She is working as an early interventionist specialist with the county Mental Health Center.

Police suspect a professional drugstore burglary ring hit the Crossville Discount Pharmacy. Officials responded to the alarm and pursued three men in a car with Louisiana plates. They have requested assistance from TBI’s crime scene unit.
