Accusations lead to bumper cars on county roadway

By Michael R. Moser / mmoser@crossville-chronicle.com

A Cumberland County man accused of committing an assault became involved in a dangerous game of bumper cars on a rural county road that resulted in he and his assailant being arrested and with the accused falling under investigation of the sheriff's department, according to offense reports.

Last Friday night deputies were dispatched to Fairview Rd. on a report of two vehicles ramming each other with both drivers trying to force the other off the road, according to Deputy Sean Mullikin's report. He arrived in the area and met with Deputy Kevin Phillips who said one of the men involved, driving a white GMC Jimmy, stopped and told him that he had been accused of wrong doing while visiting a residence in the area of Brown's Creek Rd.

When he attempted to leave that residence, the man reported that someone in a dark-colored car kept ramming his vehicle, trying to get him to pull over. As deputies arrived in the area they received another dispatch about a resident on Fairview Rd. complaining that two vehicles had crashed through his fence and caused damage to his yard.

One of the suspects was escorted to the Justice Center for questioning while deputies searched for the driver of the second vehicle. A black Kia was discovered parked in the front yard of a Brown's Creek Rd. residence and upon questioning, the driver admitted to having been involved in the rolling altercation.

George Reed Morgan, 25, 1799 Brown's Creek Rd., and Eric Robert Berghauser, 40, 31 Byron Lane, are both charged with reckless endangerment and vandalism. Bond was set at $7,000 and both are to appear on those charges in Cumberland County General Sessions Court Monday.

In addition, Berghauser was held at the Justice Center for questioning about the incident that resulted in the unidentified accusation against him. That incident remains under investigation.
