Suspect in chase critically injured; local charges pending

By Michael R. Moser / mmoser@crossville-chronicle.com

A man who police said was driving a stolen vehicle led state, county and city law enforcement officers on a lengthy and dangerous two-county chase that ended when the suspect wrecked attempting to negotiate a sharp curve, leaving the man critically injured in a regional trauma center.

Crossville Police Chief David Beaty confirmed this week that at least one officer in his department has filed charges against John Linerd Ivey, 36, 241 Wyatt Loop, Pikeville, in connection with the Saturday night incident. Because Ivey is still hospitalized, those warrants have not been served on the suspect, he was upgraded this week from critical condition to serious condition.

Crossville Police attempted to stop a 1990 Chevrolet Corsica on a suspected driving offense when the driver apparently refused to stop. The vehicle was pursued by city officers from Pigeon Ridge Rd. through the Homesteads to Hwy. 68 traveling east. Along the way city officers were joined by county sheriff's deputies and state troopers. Officers reported that speeds during the chase ranged from the low 40 mph to mid 80 mph At one point in the Homesteads area a trooper passed the vehicle in an effort to get the motorist to stop. Instead of stopping, the driver traveled into a deep ditch and reentered the road around ahead of the state officer.

City officers ended their pursuit of the stolen car at the Rhea County line but troopers backed up by county officers continued the pursuit down Grandview Mountain into Spring City where the suspect's vehicle failed to negotiate a curve and slammed into a guardrail.

Reportedly Ivey suffered a broken neck and other life-threatening injuries and was flown from the scene to a Knoxville trauma center.

It is unknown what charges Ivey is going to face from at least four different police agencies.
