Grocery bag nets deputies 12 packets of cocaine

By Michael R. Moser / mmoser@crossville-chronicle.com

A Cumberland County man and woman were jailed earlier this month after their vehicle was stopped and a resulting search netted deputies a grocery bag containing 12 packets of what officers identified as cocaine, according to reports released Thursday.

Driver of the vehicle that was stopped was identified as Robert Eugene Presley, 54, 639 Dunway Rd. He was charged with manufacture, delivery or sale of cocaine and placed under at $10,000 bond. His passenger, Kristy Elaine Smith, 49, 207 Ivanhoe Lane, was arrested on the same charge and placed under the same bond.

According to reports, Chief Narcotics Investigator Casey Cox asked deputies Sgt. Rick Lanzilotta and Cpl. Jason Elmore to be on the lookout for a red 1995 Ford Mustang convertible that had just left a residence in the county and was traveling south on Hwy. 70 N. Elmore and Lanzilotta stationed their patrol units at Little Brad's at the intersection of Hwy. 70 N and Creston Rd. and waited for the vehicle to pass. When the vehicle passed that location the deputies pulled in behind the vehicle and stopped it near the Livingston Rd. intersection inside the city limits for a window tint violation.

Officers asked for a consent to search the vehicle and permission was granted but when officers attempted to search the area of the front passenger seat, Presley reportedly revoked his consent to allow the vehicle to be searched.

At that point a drug detection dog belonging to the city was called to the scene and Sgt. Chris Kendrick responded. The dog alerted on the passenger side of the vehicle and officers recovered plastic grocery bag lying on the floor of the vehicle containing the 12 packets containing a white powdery substance.

Both occupants were then taken into custody and booked at the Justice Center on the felony drug charge.
