Dyer, Wilkinson and Crab Orchard basketball recognized at commission meeting

Achievements of local citizens were celebrated at last month's Cumberland County Commission meeting when County Mayor Brock Hill presented certificates of appreciation and resolutions recognizing successes and work well done.

Ron "Scooter" Dyer, a Vietnam veteran, was recognized by Hill for his role in organizing the Welcome Home celebration held in March for Vietnam war veterans. Veterans from across the country and one Australian war vet traveled to Crossville for the two-day observance that was highlighted by a Welcome Home Parade.

"Due to the overwhelming desire to finally be recognized for the sacrifices these veterans had made during the Vietnam War, Ron Dyer, a Vietnam veteran himself, stepped up and answered this need," the proclamation read.

The award was similar to one presented to co-organizer Dan Dunham by the city of Crossville.

Greta Wilkinson was recognized for her "years of considerate service to the veterans of our county in your capacity as the Veteran's Service Officer. Your dedication to the people of Cumberland County is boundless and your service has been far above and beyond the call of duty."

Wilkinson resigned as county VSO to take a job in the private sector.

Hill also recognized the Crab Orchard Elementary Tigers basketball team that won the James C. Haile A State Championship and the TNT AA State Championship this basketball season. The team recorded a 30-0 season.

Team members included Larry Brreden, Brandon Cole, Dustin Dishman, Johnathan Haney, Matt Mackie, John Pelfrey, Jonathan Presley, Dakota Pruitt, Dylan Rash, Chris Romines, Rick Rowan, London Smith, Shaddoe Smith, Braxton Stokes, Matt Troino and Robert Troino.

Each team member received a certificate from the mayor's office.
