Wanted suspect accused of striking Monterey officer on ATV

A Cumberland County man wanted by authorities in at least two counties is alleged to have attempted to run over a Monterey police officer who was attempting to take him into custody.

A second man, who had just been released from serving time in prison on drug charges, was taken into custody and charged with manufacture of methamphetamine, the Hilltop Express reported this week.

The incident occurred Friday around 3 p.m. when Monterey officers were told by Fentress County investigators that a stolen motorcycle might be located at the Patrick Scott Floyd residence on Dripping Springs Rd. in Monterey.

Monterey Police Chief Tim Murphy told the newspaper that Floyd had recently completed a federal prison sentence on meth charges.

Monterey Det. Jackie McQuiston and K-9 Officer Larry Bates searched a wooded area near the Floyd residence and as they approached the house, spotted a man they identified as Charles Henry of Cumberland County and a female companion on a four-wheeler.

Henry has been the subject of at least two chases and has been on the lam for months with both Cumberland and Putnam counties holding warrants for his arrest.

The two officers stepped out and attempted to stop the man from leaving the area, with Bates attempting to pull the male off the ATV. The man accelerated the ATV and drove toward McQuiston, striking him and knocking him to the ground and then running over him.

Bates then fired shots at the vehicle in an attempt to strike tires on the ATV and disable the vehicle.

Fentress County authorities who were already en route to the scene, along with the U.S. Marshal's Service, swarmed the area but were unable to locate the fleeing suspect.

Floyd was taken into custody at the residence and when a methamphetamine lab was discovered in a storage building, Drug Enforcement Administration agents were called to the scene.

Officers also reported that they found several rounds of ammunition and a couple of cans of explosive black powder in what appeared to be a child's bedroom.

Floyd was jailed on a charge of manufacturing meth and was placed under $250,000 bond.

More charges were filed against Charles Henry and authorities are continuing their search for him and another suspect identified as Johnny Key.
