O, the tardiness! Sure failure will follow in after life as a consequence of the habit of tardiness becoming fixed in youth; many pupils are becoming confirmed in this bad practice right here in Crossville. “What will the harvest be?”

We have two little restaurant keepers in town, the best you ever saw. You can get just about get anything you want to eat with ever so many smiles and a merry good time for a mere bagatelle. They tell you it is all for a cemetery fund and the ladies of the town stock the commissary from which they reap something like $6.00 a day. Just watch for Fanny and May with their long aprons darting in and out of the old Forbes Building.

A walnut tree measuring over nine feet at the butt and containing 4,500 feet of lumber was shipped from Sparta to a New York firm. It brought $200.

May 1945

Interest is growing among farmers in the county for a NO FENCE law. Petitions are being circulated and a bill has been drafted to be presented to the legislature.

The sale of the Peavine Coal Company lands consisting of 6,000 acres was held by court order. Only two bidders made offers. G.E. Harrison, prominent real estate man bid $15,000. Judge Mitchell, the other bidder, it developed had no desire to become the owner of the property but bid only to protect a sizable interest he had in the property.

Flight Officer Corley E. Bilbrey, son of Mr. & Mrs. C.E. Bilbrey, was one of hundreds of glider pilots who carried elements of the 17th Airborne Division across the historic Rhine in the recent airborne assault on Germany.

Records show that the April 2 and 3 snowfall that covered the Plateau was the largest in history. Six to eight inches fell Thursday and Friday but by Monday there was only a trace of snow left on the ground.
