LOOKING BACK: A weekly historical news feature

By Dorothy Brush / dcb1@frontier.net

April 1903

The members of the Rebecca Lodge here are preparing a play which will be given in the near future in Cline’s Hall. It is styled, “Aunt Jerusha’s Quilting Party.”

J.C.Carter and H.C. Hamby have opened a stock of groceries etc. at Millstone. They are both well and favorably known and will doubtless receive a very credited amount of business.

The night trains on the T.C. are now provided with Pullman sleepers which render travel to Nashville and Knoxville as comfortable as any road in the South.

April 1929

For more than 30 years a group of Crossville ladies known as the Art Circle have maintained the library. That this splendid little library has been of much benefit to Crossville and the county the ladies are determined that small beginning shall result in something much larger. The Art Circle is starting a drive for a $10,000 building fund for a new library. Just how long it will take these ladies will not cease until their efforts are assured.

Crossville City Council says it will be necessary in the near future to build a second disposal plant. They are investigating fire fighting equipment to place our town in a more favorable class with fire insurance companies in the state.

Woody – People in this community have been busy for the past few days planting potatoes.

April 1993

Two Pleasant Hill area men were arrested and charged with operating a still in the Browntown section. The still which was operational and still “warm” had a 35 gallon capacity. It was hidden in a wooded hollow on a small creek. The officers destroyed it.

The city now owns the Palace Theatre and the task force appointed to guide progress is asking for guidelines from the city commission.
